ICSA Conference 2026

Call for proposals 2026

CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONVERSATION

Expanding the scope of coercive control

The ICSA International Conference is the leading global forum for dialogue on cultic dynamics and coercive influence. Each year it brings together researchers, mental-health professionals, service providers, survivors, and family members from around the world to share knowledge, strengthen collaboration, and explore solutions that promote recovery, prevention, and understanding.

The 2026 conference, Expanding the Scope of Coercive Control: Understanding abusive dynamics and their impacts across interpersonal, institutional, and cultic contexts, will examine the shared mechanisms of coercion across different social systems and their human consequences. Held over four days at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, the event will provide space for reflection, research, and ethical exchange among professionals and those with lived experience.

ICSA is committed to a transparent and inclusive proposal review process. All submissions this year will be managed through Oxford Abstracts, an online platform that allows authors to upload proposals, track their status, and ensure an organized, anonymous review process where possible.

Researchers, practitioners, and individuals with lived experience are warmly invited to submit proposals and join this collaborative effort to advance understanding and strengthen responses to coercive control in all its forms.

Stage 1: Independent review

All submissions undergo a blind review process, meaning that while reviewers can see the author’s name and affiliation, reviewers themselves remain anonymous to the applicant. Each submission is independently scored by a team of nine reviewers, comprising select ICSA Board members, ICSA staff, and external professionals not involved in ICSA’s administration. The review team represents a wide range of expertise and lived experience, including professional researchers, mental health professionals, academics, survivors, family members, and friends of those affected by coercive environments.

Reviewers assign scores from 0 to 5 based on the established criteria below. Scores are then averaged to produce an overall rating for each submission.

Evaluation Criteria
  1. Relevance to the conference theme
How well the submission aligns with Expanding the Scope of Coercive Control and contributes to understanding coercive systems across the outlined contexts.

  2. Clarity and organization
The extent to which the proposal clearly articulates its aims, framework, and key points within the word limit.

  3. Originality and contribution
The degree to which the presentation offers new insights, approaches, or perspectives that advance knowledge or practice in the field.

  4. Rigor and quality
For research or clinical presentations, the soundness of methodology, theoretical grounding, or evidence base.

  5. Ethical approach
Sensitivity to participants and subject matter, including attention to survivor well-being, confidentiality, and responsible communication.

  6. Potential impact and applicability
The potential to inform prevention, recovery, education, or policy efforts related to coercive control.

Stage 2: Conference committee selection

Final decisions regarding acceptance are made by a separate Conference Committee, which reviews submissions based on the blind average scores and additional program priorities.

These priorities include:

  • Overall balance and coherence of the conference program
  • Diversity of perspectives and disciplines
  • Representation of survivor and first-time presenters
  • Geographic and gender inclusivity
  • Alignment with ICSA’s ethical and educational mission
  • Session structure and narrative flow

This two-step process ensures that final selections reflect both the independent expertise of reviewers and the broader vision and inclusivity goals of the conference program.

Application reviews will be finalized by 31 January 2026, and notified of their acceptance by mid February.

  • Possible outcomes: Accepted, accepted with revision, or not accepted. In the case that a revision is requested, the applicant will be notified by email with the required changes.
  • Post-selection process: Accepted presenters will be invited to confirm participation and provide updated abstracts or materials for inclusion in the program. Presenters who are unable to attend may designate a substitute speaker or request to give a remote, pre-recorded presentation.

ICSA values contributions from both professionals and individuals with lived experience. Submissions from survivors are especially welcome, as are proposals from LGBTQ+ participants, people with disabilities, people of color, and members of other minority or at-risk groups. We recognize that not all contributors come from academic or clinical backgrounds; therefore, clarity, relevance, and insight are valued equally alongside formal research.

Reviewers are instructed to evaluate all proposals with respect and awareness of the diverse forms of expertise represented in this field.

Submissions are collected and stored through Oxford Abstracts. By submitting a proposal, you consent to the use of your information for conference planning purposes only. Data will not be shared externally beyond the review and program committees.
