This support group for former cult members was established in 1976 and is facilitated by Lorna Goldberg and Bill Goldberg, licensed clinical social workers with longstanding experience working with individuals and families affected by cult involvement. The group is offered as part of their professional services.
The group provides a space for former cult members to connect with others who have had similar experiences, reduce isolation, and better understand the common dynamics of cult involvement. Participants often find it helpful to recognise how manipulation and control techniques are shared across different types of groups, regardless of ideology, and to exchange practical insights with others at various stages of post-cult adjustment.
The group is open only to former cult members. Before joining, prospective participants meet individually with one of the facilitators for an intake consultation focused on the person’s cult experience and suitability for the group. This consultation also provides an opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance. A sliding-scale fee applies to the intake consultation; there is no fee for group meetings.
